A flow control scheme based on buffer state for wireless TCP

چکیده
Reliable transport protocols such as TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) are tuned to perform well in traditional networks where packet losses occur mostly because of congestion. However, on the wireless links where packet losses frequently happen, TCP shows a serious drop in performance. In this paper, we propose a scheme, called BSF (Buffer State based Flow control), which can solve this problem. BSF is implemented at the base station of a wireless network. So, it does not need any modification of TCP stacks in the end system. BSF uses the buffer state of base station as the criterion to detect wireless link error and reduces unnecessary contraction of congestion window in TCP. As a result, the buffer of base station maintains non-empty state to maximize the link utilization. In our simulation study, this approach achieved up to 250 % improvement in performance. XINBING WANG. Performance Analysis of TCP over Wired and Wireless Networks. (Under the direction of Professor Do Young Eun.) Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) currently accounts for about 90% applications and 80% data of network traffic, and plays the dominant role in Internet transmission. In this dissertation, we present three studies of TCP performance over wired and wireless networks. In ...
متن کاملDRA: a new buffer management scheme for wireless atm networks using aggregative large deviation principle
In this paper, we present a buffer management scheme called Dynamic Resource Allocation (DRA) that provides TCP traffic control guarantees to VCs carrying multiple dynamic discard thresholds (Multiple Dynamic Thresholds—MDT) over a wireless CDMA ATM network. It is assumed that we have TCP wireless ATM networks integrating the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA). A major task activity related t...
متن کاملDynamic Buffer Management for Multimedia QoS in Beyond 3G Wireless Networks
This paper investigates a dynamic buffer management scheme for QoS control of multimedia services in beyond 3G wireless systems. The scheme is studied in the context of the state-of-the-art 3.5G system i.e. the High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) which enhances 3G UMTS to support high-speed packet switched services. Unlike earlier systems, UMTS-evolved systems from HSDPA and beyond incorp...
متن کاملPerformance Optimization of Transmission Control Protocol in Heterogeneous Wireless Network during Mobility
Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) has shown serious performance limitations on wireless media. The main causes of these limitations have their root in mobility and link characteristics of wireless media. Heterogeneous environment of multiple radio-access technologies generally increases handover frequency, causing adverse impact on TCP flow and congestion control operations. In this paper, we...
متن کاملTCP-friendly flow control of wireless multimedia using ECN marking
In a wireless network packet losses can be caused by not only network congestion but also unreliable error-prone wireless links. Therefore, flow control schemes which use packet loss as a congestion measure cannot be directly applicable to a wireless network because there is no way to distinguish congestion losses from wireless losses. In this paper, we extend so-called TCP-friendly flow contro...
